The Aspiring Snow Special at $491 and the Snow Landing flight at $214 both set down on snow in the Alps. The Mt Aspiring Explorer at $564 lands twice, and the Mt Cook flight at $1,467 lands on two different glaciers. The Milford Sound flight with a landing, at $377, is the sixth.

Three more flights land, but not on ice or snow. The Wānaka Max flight at $316 sets down on alpine peaks such as Coromandel Peak or Mt Alpha. The Siberia Experience at $360 and the private heli-hike at $1,382 both land in a valley so guests can walk, not on the glacier itself.

The remaining three — the Wānaka Experience, the Mt Aspiring flight and the Milford Sound cruise — do not land at all, at $214, $406 and $445. They fly over the ice rather than onto it.

Reading the listing this way, before you book, is the fastest way to avoid the gap between what a name promises and what a flight actually does. A name that mentions Mt Aspiring, the Southern Alps or a glacier does not by itself mean a landing on ice or snow — the Wānaka Max flight and the Mt Aspiring flyover both name Mt Aspiring, and neither lands on the glacier.

The six landing flights are not identical beyond the landing itself. The Glacier Experience at $307 and the Snow Landing flight at $214 are both run as small groups and both list wheelchair access. The Aspiring Snow Special at $491 and the Mt Aspiring Explorer at $564 skip the queue at the helipad and also list wheelchair access.

The Mt Cook flight at $1,467 carries the same three things — skip the line, small group, wheelchair access — and is flagged on the listing as a new activity this season, which is why it has no reviews yet. The Milford Sound landing flight at $377 is the plainest of the six: a small group and the landing, with no other extras stated.

None of the six lists a pickup from your accommodation; all six meet at a helipad in or near Wanaka. Every one of them carries free cancellation, so holding a slot on a landing flight costs nothing until you keep it, and every one asks you to book at least several hours ahead rather than on the day.

A landing adds time and price, but not in a straight line. The cheapest flight that lands, the Snow Landing trip at $214, costs the same as the shortest flyover, the Wānaka Experience at $214 — both run twenty-five minutes. The jump comes with a second landing or a longer route: the Mt Aspiring Explorer at two landings runs $564, and the Mt Cook flight with two glacier landings runs $1,467 for three hours.

The Aspiring Snow Special at $491 sits between the two: one hour, one landing, and a rating of 4.4 from its guests so far. On the Milford Sound side, the landing flight at $377 costs less than the cruise version at $445 — the cruise trades the landing for a longer route past more of the fiord.

None of this says which flight suits you; it says what you are paying for when you choose a landing over a flyover. The two newest listings, the private heli-hike and the Mt Cook flight, have no reviews yet to weigh against the rest.

Set against the six Wanaka glacier helicopter flights that land, the Rob Roy Glacier hike at $248 is the one way to reach ice-fed country here without a helicopter fare at all.
