Wanaka helicopter prices: what every flight costs, listing by listing

The listing prices on this page are the current fares read from GetYourGuide; none of them change with the season by themselves. What does change through the year is how far ahead the popular flights sell out, not the number on the listing.

Fourteen fares, and three things move the number. The first is length: the shortest Wanaka helicopter flight, at $214, runs twenty-five minutes, and price climbs from there as the route gets longer. The Mt Aspiring Explorer at $564 runs seventy-five minutes, roughly three times the length for roughly two and a half times the fare.

The second is the landing. A flight that sets down on a glacier or on snow generally costs more than a flyover of the same length, though not always by much — the Snow Landing flight at $214 costs exactly the same as the no-landing Wānaka Experience, both at twenty-five minutes. Where the price jumps is a second landing or a longer route to reach one, such as the Mt Cook flight at $1,467.

The third is whether the trip is shared or private. The Rob Roy Glacier hike at $248 becomes a private version at $333 for the same eight hours with lunch. The private heli-hike at $1,382 and the Mt Cook flight at $1,467 are the two most expensive fares on this site, and both are private, new listings without reviews yet.

None of the fourteen fares include pickup from your accommodation; every one meets you at a helipad in or near Wanaka. Booking windows vary a little — most listings ask for eight to ten hours’ notice rather than a same-day booking, and the Siberia Experience asks for as little as two.

The private heli-hike at $1,382 and the Mt Cook flight at $1,467 stand well above the rest of this site’s fares, and both share the same explanation: the aircraft is booked for your group alone, for most of a day, rather than shared with other passengers on a short loop.

The private heli-hike runs six hours: a flight in to Dragonfly Peak or Black Peak, a walk, and a flight back out. The Mt Cook flight runs three hours and lands twice, on two different glaciers, with views of Aoraki and the Otago region. Neither has collected a review yet, because both are new listings this season, and neither price is a mistake — a private, multi-hour charter costs more than a seat on a twenty-five-minute scenic loop.

Every fare on this page, from the cheapest to these two, carries free cancellation, so holding a booking while you decide costs nothing.

Set against the shorter flights, the gap is easier to read once the day is broken down. A twenty-five-minute loop at $214 uses a shared aircraft for a small part of an afternoon. A six-hour private heli-hike or a three-hour flight with two landings blocks out the whole aircraft, the pilot and the guide for the group booking it, for most of a day. The fare reflects the aircraft’s time, not just the minutes in the air.

A higher fare does not automatically buy a smaller group or easier access. The Wānaka Experience at $214, one of the cheapest fares here, already lists wheelchair access. The Aspiring Snow Special at $491 and the Mt Aspiring Explorer at $564, both well above it, list the same.

Where price does track something specific is privacy. The Rob Roy Glacier hike moves from $248 shared to $333 private for the same eight hours and lunch. At the very top of the range, both the private heli-hike at $1,382 and the Mt Cook flight at $1,467 are booked for one group only — that exclusivity, more than the flight time itself, is what separates them from the rest of the fares on this page.

Every fare, cheap or not, carries free cancellation and asks for a booking made hours ahead rather than on the day.
